La Abeja Restaurant, located at 508 E Colfax Ave in Denver, is an inviting gem that transports you straight to Mexico with its authentic charm and flavorful offerings. Reviewers consistently praise the large and hearty breakfast burritos, with the smothered variety earning a spot in many customers' top choices. The Huevos Rancheros, made with freshly smothered green chile, is another highlight, resonating with those craving traditional flavors.
While the exterior may appear rough and the surrounding area a bit sketchy, the warmth of the food surpasses these concerns. Many customers appreciate the generous portions at reasonable prices, making the tacos—available in marinated pork, shredded beef, and more—a must-try at just $4 each. However, some patrons noted that while the flavors are good, there is room for improvement in seasoning, especially for the carnitas.
The family-owned essence shines through, although some felt the service could be more engaging. Still, the authenticity and value of La Abeja Restaurant ultimately make it a notable spot for Mexican cuisine enthusiasts in Denver. Don’t let the humble façade fool you—inside, you’ll find a vibrant taste of Zacatecas that beckons for a return visit.

Reviews for La Abeja Restaurant
Review highlights
Based on 543 reviewsLa Abeja Restaurant is frequently praised for its authentic Mexican flavors, particularly its generous breakfast burritos and flavorful tacos, capturing the essence of traditional Mexico. Customers appreciate the affordability and taste, with popular menu items like the carnitas and asada receiving positive mentions. While the food is consistently highlighted as a strength, feedback commonly notes the modest, "hole-in-the-wall" ambiance and somewhat challenging location on Colfax Avenue, which can feel uninviting due to surrounding construction and neighborhood concerns. Additionally, service is generally friendly but sometimes described as lacking a warm, welcoming touch. Overall, La Abeja stands out for delivering authentic and satisfying Mexican cuisine despite its unpretentious setting.
It's a very authentic cantina, with great food to match. This spot makes you feel like you're in Mexico without paying the airfare. I highly recommend the carnitas burrito, it's huge and tasty.
Very rough place from the outside. The breakfast burrito was big and it was good. I thought it had more potatoes than I typically like in my breakfast burrito, but as you work your way into the burrito it isn’t so potatoey. I really liked the heat from the sauce but it lacked a lot of foavor. I’m glad I stopped in and will try again!!
I came here for first time due to high reviews. This is a family owned business from Zacatecas, Mexico. It’s an okay looking hole in wall across from McDonalds on Colfax and Pennsylvania. Not the best neighborhood and with construction, parking can be difficult. The staff seemed friendly and courteous but not really customer friendly. Not wanting to greet and make people feel welcome or hold a conversation. They are open until 3pm and have a good steady stream of people that come in. If you are sensitive to sodium or just want to watch sodium intake, probably not a good place. I sampled the Menudo which was very tasty but I could taste the sodium sort of like Pho that has a lot too. I ordered the breakfast burritos. One regular and one smothered. You don’t get red or green chili/salsa on side because they say it’s inside the burrito. The burritos were huge even for $9-$10. The chorizo wasn’t spicy like you tend to think chorizo should be. The green chili was okay. I’m not sure if it’s homemade or not but it didn’t taste fresh. I don’t believe it’s made daily. It had a taste of old.
Their smothered breakfast burrito is in my top 3. Affordable and delicious. The construction and where it is on Colfax makes it feel sketchy but they make great food. The inside is "hole in the wall" but I don't mind and there is seating.
This restaurant had a spot at a car show that we went to over the weekend. We stopped on the way out and got 4 asada tacos and 4 carnitas tacos. The asada was delicious and the carnitas were good too but could have used more seasoning. We only tried the red salsa but it was very good. They had cilantro and onions on the tacos and limes on the side. They also offered aguas frescas. We did not partake, but it was nice to have it available. The ladies were fast and very friendly.
One of the best breakfast burritos in Denver. It's pretty large so it's not the cheapest in the city. The green chili has a nice spice level, smooth texture, and robust flavor. The coffee had a hint of cinnamon which was a pleasant surprise.
Mexican comfort food at its finest. While the location and exterior might leave you feeling doubtful, all apprehension will disappear once that first bite hits your tongue. The food is delicious (my wife claims that their carne asada burrito is the best burrito she's ever eaten) but perhaps more importantly: it's consistent. We've never not loved every bite. We've remained very faithful to their burritos on all our previous visits but this morning I was feeling adventurous and went for the chilaquiles instead (pictured here, taken to-go). Safe to say that I now have a new regular order. And it was only made better by the addition of green chile which they sell to-go in multiple different sizes. We also never visit without buying an extra side of beans for use in making tacos at home the following day. Portions are more than generous. Two items plus one side is enough to feed my wife and I for two meals while still feeling borderline uncomfortably full each time.
Great Mexican food on Colfax. Classic dishes and Colorado staples. Cheap, divey, no frills and can't go wrong.
